MYSTERY BULGE: WAS BUSH WIRED?
Oct 11 2004
By Frank Corless
GEORGE Bush has been accused of cribbing answers via a wire during his first TV debate.
A bulge could be clearly seen in the back of the US president's jacket during his head-to-head with Democrat presidential hopeful Kerry 11 days ago.
It prompted speculation that blundering Bush had a secret radio transmitter allowing aides to give him better retorts to quick-fire Kerry.
Dubya, with what looked like a wire trailing down his neck, also took long pauses several times. And he had an odd expression as if he was listening to someone giving him a response.
He even snapped at Kerry saying, "Let me finish," even though his rival had not interrupted him.
But by the second debate in Missouri on Friday, the bulge had gone but there was still something ruining the line of his suit.
The Audiogate affair has sparked worldwide interest. Experts have now studied photos of Bush during the first debate in Florida and are still baffled.
Spyware expert Jacob Mc Kenna said: "There's certainly something on his back, and it appears to be electronic."
David Lindorff, of internet political site Salon said: "There's definitely something under there pushing up through the suit."
Yesterday Bush's campaign director Mark McKinnon denied his boss was wearing a wire. He said: "The president has never been assisted by any audio And tailor George de Paris, who made the suit, said: "It must have been a pucker along the back seam, accentuated when he crossed his arms and leaned forward."
But Kerry still emerged the winner in both debates even if Bush was getting extra help. He has a one per cent lead in the latest polls.
